On Menorca’s beautifully unspoilt north western coast, amidst a picturesque patchwork of gently undulating meadows and farmland, the sea meets the shore via a sheltered inlet at the pretty cove of Cala Morell.
Clusters of white painted homes dot the hillside around and above and offer a restful coastal retreat with a village-like ambience that has become so favoured by guests that we see them returning year after year.
It was therefore with delight that we discovered Garbo, a stylish home which faces south towards a verdant backdrop of woodland on a residential lane just 600m from the steps that lead down to the cove itself.
Being the latest creation of its local owners, its clean lines, neutral colour scheme and elegant look are perfectly up-to-the-minute, whilst the high-pitched ceilings that span its light-filled rooms display the juxtaposition of exposed beams and honey-coloured stone that has become such a timeless characteristic of Menorcan architecture.
The four main bedrooms are located off a corridor beyond the living area and these are complemented by an additional single bedroom which sits alongside the kitchen and provides extra capacity and a cleverly incorporated en suite shower cubicle.
The heart of this home is however the south-facing living room which flows seamlessly through French windows to a covered outdoor dining terrace.
Indoor and outdoor living are perfectly connected here and with barbecue facilities so conveniently to hand and a pleasing choice of poolside lawns and terraces available for lounging, guests may not wish to venture far.
It is nevertheless an easy stroll from Garbo to Cala Morell’s restaurant, which overlooks the water and is just 650m from the house.
Just below it is the sheltered cove, where ocean vistas can be enjoyed either from the bay itself or from the levelled rock platforms that lie below the cliffs.
All amenities and a mouth-watering choice of restaurants can be found in historic Ciutadella (8km), whilst also not to be missed are the twin sandy beaches that line the rural bay of Algaiarens amidst the beautiful countryside of La Vall, just a 10 minute drive from the house.
